Highway 11A/Highway 2 Interchange Reconfiguration
Alberta Transportation
Red Deer, Alberta

The Highway 11A/Highway 2 interchange was originally constructed in the 1960s with a cloverleaf configuration. Increases in traffic volumes on Highway 2 and Highway 11A have triggered the need for improvements to increase traffic operations and overall public safety.

Al-Terra was retained by Alberta Transportation to complete a functional plan, which identified the need to convert the interchange to a diamond configuration.

Following the completion of the functional plan, Al-Terra was awarded a second contract to lead a multi-disciplined engineering team to complete the detailed design and contract administration for the interchange conversion. There were a number of complex elements on this project, from managing the large volumes of traffic through the construction zone to the structural challenges of converting two bridges into a one to accommodate new left turning lanes on the structure. The construction for this project was successfully completed in the spring of 2012.
