99 Street Streetscaping

99 Street is a major artery into Edmonton’s downtown and is characterized by both residential and commercial properties adjacent to the roadway. The rehabilitation of 99 Street, from 81 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive, required the removal and reconstruction of the monolithic sidewalk curb and gutter, as well as the four lane undivided roadway. Street lighting, traffic signals and storm sewers were also replaced. Al-Terra was retained to provide detail design, utility coordination and a traffic and pedestrian accommodation strategy.

It was originally planned to reconstruct just the failing curb lanes and rehabilitate the existing centre lanes; however, after careful assessment it was determined that the constraints of the existing high crown and the close proximity of buildings would result in undesirable cross falls and longitudinal grades. The new roadway cross section would require significant lowering of the centreline.

Another major challenge for this project was that Scona Road (the extension of 99 Street to the north) was also reconstructed at the same time. This required significant coordination with another project team to ensure the successful staging of each project, while maintaining appropriate vehicle, pedestrian and transit traffic.

Al-Terra’s landscape team (then EDA Collaborative) was contracted to perform services for this project as well.
