Neighbourhood Renewal, Municipal Rehabilitation, and Streetscaping

As cities and towns age, it is imperative that the infrastructure maintains its integrity, serves its purpose, and is adapted to meet the needs of a modern community. Al-Terra brings extensive experience to assessment, planning, and design required to revitalize established neighbourhoods and transportation corridors. Our projects include signature streets, urban parks, plazas, open spaces, and commercial and mixed used developments.

This work involves collaboration across multiple Al-Terra teams, including Urban Design and Renewal, Municipal Engineering, Urban Transportation, Geomatics, and Landscape Architecture. Our teams provide client-focused solutions, and we seek ways to evolve our expertise and provide additional value to our clients and their projects. We take pride in our long-standing relationships with clients such as the City of Edmonton and Strathcona County, Spruce Grove, Leduc, St. Albert, Morinville, Fort Saskatchewan, Red Deer, Devon, Beaumont and surrounding counties.

We renew and revitalize communities to meet the needs of current residents while also considering the future growth and development of the city or municipality where we are operating. Our teams improve roads, sidewalks, lighting, and curbs. In addition, we provide pavement design and detailed recommendations on rehabilitation strategies for existing roadways. Our goals are to maintain and expand natural assets while working to promote active transportation, develop safe communities, leading to improvement in quality of life, and support methods of combating climate change. From drainage and flood protection through low impact development (LID) to expanding our knowledge on building resilient communities Al-Terra is at the forefront of exploring opportunities to enhance livability.

Our streetscape work involves reimagining developed streets in collaboration with clients and the public. We consider the area’s context and constraints to incorporate sustainable designs for pedestrian and cycling enhancements, landscaping, wayfinding, and urban design elements. Our teams are committed to creating inviting and safe spaces for people to enjoy. Our approach includes placemaking, active transportation, and integrating transportation systems. We employ innovative area-based network planning, wayfinding planning and design, traffic calming measures, and signal design to create a cohesive and welcoming space for people.

Systems thinking, urban design analysis, and network design integrations factor into our designs. Implementing innovative and creative solutions such as LID, extending the urban tree canopy, street furnishings, and more help us to enhance the quality of the places and spaces we create.

We prioritize accessibility and inclusion by using programs such as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus) techniques in our design solutions. We value listening to the public and have dedicated expertise in public engagement. Al-Terra works closely with communities, stakeholders, and municipalities to synchronize our projects with their wants, needs, and priorities.
