I currently serve as a Senior Land Surveyor at Al-Terra, with a career spanning several decades in land surveying across Alberta and particularly the City of Calgary. Throughout my career, I’ve been dedicated to determining and interpreting the location of boundaries, buildings, structures, and other features within Calgary and surrounding areas. I appreciate that my work has played a role in shaping the City’s infrastructure and development.

Born on Halloween in 1948, I grew up on a farm in Frontier, Saskatchewan, where I developed a strong work ethic that would shape my future. My professional journey began with diverse experiences, including laboring in British Columbia’s iron ore smelter, participating in Arctic Circle seismic gravity surveys, and working as a survey helper in Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

In 1971, I enrolled at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Calgary, Alberta to study survey technology. During my studies, I gained practical experience working for the City of Calgary’s survey department. After graduating in 1973, I articled under D.R. Jaques, A.L.S. at Acumen Engineering, and in 1976, I obtained my Alberta Land Surveyors commission. In 1976, I joined Renton and Partners. There, I partnered with Ron Kellam and eventually took leadership of the firm. In 1983, we renamed the company Kellam Berg Engineering and Surveys Ltd., which we co-founded and led for nearly four decades, providing comprehensive surveying and engineering services. In November 2022, Kellam Berg joined Al-Terra, where I continue to work and share my expertise. With my characteristic humor, I often joke that I plan to stay at Al-Terra until “they run me off.”

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy staying active at the gym, have a keen interest in real estate and renovations, and cherish winter vacations and time spent with family. Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say, “Life has been good.” I remain grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in the field of land surveying and look forward to continuing my contributions to the profession.
